What should you wear to a Japanese cabaret club?
For most Japanese cabaret clubs and KTV venues, smart casual is the safest choice. Men should choose a jacket or clean collared shirt with slacks and leather shoes. Women can wear a dress, blouse, skirt, tailored pants or polished evening casual outfit.
What to avoid
Avoid sandals, beachwear, gym clothes, damaged denim, sleeveless undershirts, sports jerseys and very casual shorts. Premium venues in Roppongi, Ginza, Shinjuku, Kitashinchi and Nakasu may refuse entry if your outfit looks too casual.
Foreigner-friendly dress code tips
If you are unsure, dress one level more formal than a normal bar. A simple jacket, dark pants and clean shoes are usually enough. When booking through the concierge, you can also ask whether a specific venue has stricter dress rules.
